Bermuda Biological Station Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026

A good sailing day, a selective fishing day, and a poor bargain for small craft: Bermuda Biological Station gets a brisk, wet WSW pulse that rewards capable crews but makes paddling and casual boating hard work. Sailing leads the board at 8.1/10, with a representative 20-knot WSW wind and gusts to 28 knots providing plenty of drive. The tradeoff is obvious: 1.2–1.5 m seas, short-period swell around 1.06 m at 4.7 seconds, full cloud cover and rain possible through most of the day. This is not the gentle version of October. Boating rates 5.1 and kayaking 4.8, reflecting the wind, chop, current and precipitation; those scores are suitability guides, not safety clearances. The day’s calmest wave height is still about 1.24 m near 9 AM, so there is no truly glassy escape window. For fishing, the 6.5/10 rating holds steady from yesterday despite the much stronger wind. The most useful timing is the late-morning solunar major period, 10:35 AM to 12:35 PM, which also runs toward the 1:40 PM low tide. A second major period arrives late, 10:35 PM to 12:35 AM, while the 5:05–6:05 AM minor period overlaps pre-dawn and the rising morning tide. Pressure is rising from around 1011 hPa, but exposed-water comfort will be the limiting factor rather than a lack of calendar opportunities. Diving remains comparatively strong at 7.8/10, though it is a clear step down from the reconstructed 8.8–9.2 scores earlier this week. Marine water is 27.7 C, with an SST anomaly of +1.9 C versus average, but surface wind and waves deserve more respect than the temperature invites. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 11.6 km; that does not describe underwater visibility. The water is markedly rougher than yesterday’s 3.8-knot setup, when boating and kayaking both scored 7.4. Friday looks like the cleaner reset: winds peak near 12.4 knots and waves ease to 0.9–1.3 m. Conditions then build again, with 1.4–1.8 m waves forecast Sunday. Best bet: sail with a reefing plan, or wait for Friday if your ideal day involves less wrestling and more water time.
