Prince Rupert, BC Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026
Prince Rupert Harbor gets a clear green light for small-craft boating and kayaking today, with a caveat: it is a calm, grey, cold-water day rather than a carefree one. Boating rates 8.9/10 and kayaking 9.4/10, supported by very light northeast wind—roughly 1 to 4 knots through the day—and modest 0.3 to 0.4 m waves. The representative sea state is 0.3 m at 9 seconds, with only a tiny wind-wave component, so the harbor should offer notably manageable travel conditions. That is not a safety guarantee; 11 C water remains unforgiving, and the all-day rain window and full cloud cover argue for dry layers, reliable communications, and a conservative turnaround plan. The best all-round window is late morning into early afternoon, roughly 10:16 AM to 12:16 PM, when the major solunar period overlaps the 12:14 PM high tide of 6.08 m. Fishing is a respectable 6.4/10 in the model, while wildlife scores 7.6/10; those ratings reflect the supplied timing, tide, wind and related inputs, not a promise of action. A second, quieter timing opportunity comes near the 6:18 PM low tide, with the 4:46–5:46 PM minor solunar period leading into it. Daylight fades quickly after the 7:07 PM sunset. For divers, the surface is cooperative but the score is a middling 6.3/10, down from 7.6 on each of the previous two days. Cold water is the obvious tradeoff, and the available atmospheric visibility of 42 km should not be mistaken for underwater visibility. Surface chlorophyll is very high, but it does not tell us what is happening below the water or around the food chain. Sailing, at 4.9/10, has the opposite problem: the breeze is too scarce to make much of it. Compared with recent CatchWindow estimates, today improves on yesterday for boating and kayaking as winds ease from 5.9 knots, while fishing slips from 7.4 and diving softens. Pressure is falling from 1018 hPa, another reason not to overread the calm surface. Thursday looks wetter and breezier, with waves building as high as 0.7 m. Friday stays damp; Saturday and especially Sunday offer the quieter marine outlook before wind and waves rise again early next week. Best bet: launch late morning, use the noon high tide as your pivot, and be off the water before the grey afternoon starts feeling longer than planned.
