Tofino Harbour, BC Daily Water Report — October 4, 2026
Tofino Harbour is a good small-craft and paddle day, with the caveat that the air is doing its best impression of a wet wool blanket. Boating rates strongest at 7.7/10 and kayaking 7.8/10: winds stay light, generally under 5 knots through the day, precipitation is not indicated, and the 0.3 m wind chop should remain modest. The sea state is not flat, though. Total waves run roughly 0.9–1.2 m, led by a 0.78 m westerly swell near 11 seconds, so sheltered-water plans make more sense than treating the harbour like a bathtub. The best all-round window is early morning through mid-morning, around dawn at 6:55 AM and the 8:27 AM high tide. It overlaps the 7:23–9:23 AM solunar major period, while winds remain light and pressure is rising through a 1018 hPa day. Anglers have a respectable 6/10 setup under the scoring model, with a second timing opportunity around the evening high at 7:45 PM and the 7:23–9:23 PM major period. That late window arrives after sunset at 7:00 PM, so navigation lights and conservative margins matter. Visibility is the day’s biggest practical nuisance: the current forecast value is only 0.1 km beneath full cloud cover, despite no rain window. That is atmospheric visibility, not a statement about underwater clarity, but it is plenty reason for boaters, paddlers, and shoreline explorers to slow down, stay conspicuous, and keep close track of position. Water is 13.6 C, so immersion protection remains a sensible part of the plan. Diving earns 6.3/10, helped by light wind and manageable waves, but surface conditions and cold water still demand a disciplined entry-and-exit plan. Compared with the recent CatchWindow record, today is a step down from yesterday’s exceptionally strong boating and kayaking scores, but remains comfortably better than the windier September 29 setup. Sailing is only middling at 5.8/10: calm water is useful, but there is not much breeze to work with. Monday and Tuesday bring more wind and 1.2–1.4 m waves; Wednesday looks light-winded but rougher, with 1.5–1.8 m seas, and conditions build further late week. Best bet: launch early, use the morning high tide, and let the fog—not the light wind—set your pace.
