CatchWindow fishing intelligence

Cape Town, South Africa Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026

Cape Town harbour gets a qualified green light today: boating and kayaking are the standouts, while the sea state asks divers, anglers and shoreline users to keep their expectations—and their footing—sensible. The activity scores favour boating at 8/10, kayaking and diving at 7.9, with fishing a respectable 6.8. Those are planning guides, not safety clearances. The useful window is early, from dawn through the 07:25–09:25 solunar major period. Winds are very light for much of the day, generally 0.5–6.3 knots, and there is no rain indicated. Clear skies and a warm afternoon, reaching about 25°C, make time afloat appealing. But the harbour does not get to ignore the ocean: wave heights sit around 1.5–1.8 m, driven chiefly by a 1.64 m southwest swell at 9.4 seconds. Wind chop is negligible, which helps small craft, but it does not erase the rolling swell or its effects around entrances, exposed edges and hard structures. For paddlers, the light wind is the main advantage; the calmest wave height is forecast near 14:00 at 1.52 m, though gusts may reach 19.6 knots around 15:00. Boaters have the day’s strongest score, but should treat that afternoon gust potential as a reason to be back inside rather than testing the forecast’s sense of humour. Sailing is only middling at 5.6/10: there is simply not much steady breeze to work with, despite mostly clear weather. Divers get a better score than yesterday’s 6.5, helped by the low wind, but the 14.4°C sea is cold and the swell remains the limiting factor. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 42 km; that says nothing about underwater visibility. The sea surface temperature is also 0.9°C below average. Fishing improves slightly from yesterday’s 6.5, with the morning major period the cleaner timing choice; pressure is falling from around 1013 hPa, so conditions are not entirely settled. Compared with recent days, this is calmer in wind than October 3, but not a flat-water day. Tuesday brings rain and a sharp jump to 1.9–4.2 m waves, with even larger seas continuing through midweek before easing gradually. Best bet: launch early for a harbour-focused paddle or boat outing, enjoy the light wind, and let the southwest swell—not the blue sky—set the day’s limits.
