Sand Island, Midway Atoll Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026
Sand Island gets a qualified go for sailing and diving, but it is not a casual small-craft day: the open-water sea state keeps boating merely middling and kayaking firmly in the “only if you have a very good reason and the right margin” category. The useful stretch begins after dawn, with 10–18-knot easterlies, a representative 11 knots, and a rising barometer near 1021 hPa. Sailing earns the day’s strongest practical score at 8.1/10; there is enough breeze to work with, though the 2.3-metre representative wave height and nearly 10-second period mean the ride will have real motion. Gusts were strongest around midnight, near 24 knots, so the daylight picture is less punchy than the overnight start, but not flat-water polite. Diving rates 7.8/10, helped by 26.9 C marine SST and moderate wind, but surface conditions remain the tradeoff. The swell is 1.32 metres from 43 degrees, with total waves ranging from 2.3 to 3.2 metres through the day. That is a meaningful entry, exit, and boat-handling consideration, not a footnote. The reported 27.56 km atmospheric visibility is encouraging for the skyward view only; it does not establish underwater visibility. Blue-water, low-chlorophyll conditions are also not a promise of what will be seen below. For fishing, the better timing is the 7:55–9:55 AM solunar major period, arriving as the tide rises from the 5:00 AM low of 0.05 m toward a modest 0.40 m high at 12:10 PM. A second major period runs 7:55–9:55 PM, after the 6:31 PM low. Fishing’s 6.7/10 reflects decent timing and pressure, rather than an all-clear on the water. A brief rain window is forecast around 7–8 AM. Compared with the recent CatchWindow record, winds are lighter than October 4’s 22.9-knot reading and pressure is notably higher, while diving, sailing, and wildlife scores have improved. Boating remains only 5/10 and kayaking 4.1/10 because waves and current still matter more than a pleasant air temperature. The next two days look wetter and windier, with rain chances near 80% and peak winds above 20 knots; October 6 has the lowest projected waves before seas build again. Best bet: sail the morning with a reef in mind, then let the 2-plus-metre sea state have the last word.
