CatchWindow fishing intelligence

West Fowl River Bridge, AL Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026

Good day for boating, paddling and diving, with a qualified yes for fishing; sailing gets the short straw. The water is manageable rather than glassy, with 0.7–0.9 m waves, a 0.52 m swell from 120 degrees, and short-period wind waves adding some chop. Northeast winds are generally light to moderate at 4.6–11.4 knots, but gusts deserve attention, especially late when the strongest forecast gust reaches 20.6 knots around 11 PM. The best all-around daylight window is late morning through early afternoon. The noon high tide of 0.47 m coincides neatly with the 10:13 AM–12:13 PM solunar major period, while winds should still be more cooperative than their late-day and nighttime gust potential suggests. Boating rates 7.9/10 and kayaking 7.8/10 under the combined wind, wave, current and dry-weather setup. The current forecast is modest at about 0.17 m/s toward 56 degrees, but bridge-area water can still concentrate movement and chop; treat the score as a planning aid, not a safety clearance. Fishing holds at 6.6/10, unchanged from the two previous CatchWindow reports. The midday major period is the cleanest timing play, with a second major period from 10:13 PM to midnight for those operating after dark. Pressure is rising from around 1013 hPa, and no rain is indicated, though full cloud cover means the day may look more subdued than the warm 21.6–28.8 C air range suggests. Diving scores 7.7/10, improved from yesterday’s 7.4, helped by warm water near 28.5 C and relatively contained seas. That said, atmospheric visibility near 18.7 km is not an underwater-visibility reading, and the short wind-wave period is a fair reason to keep expectations practical. Water remains notably warm, with SST about 2.7 C above average. Compared with the recent run, today is a step down from the notably calmer October 5 boating and paddling setup, but it is still more workable than the rougher weather arriving Friday and especially Saturday, when waves may build to 3.3 m and winds peak above 30 knots. Conditions ease sharply Sunday, with the calmest-looking marine stretch developing Monday through Wednesday. Best bet: launch late morning, use the noon tide and major solunar window, and be back in before the evening breeze decides it wants a bigger role.
