CatchWindow fishing intelligence
Adak Island, AK Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026
Adak’s water gets a qualified go today: sailing has the clearest edge, while fishing and diving are workable in carefully chosen windows; small-craft paddling is the least forgiving proposition. The headline is a brisk southwest wind around 16 knots, with gusts reaching 30 knots and a pre-dawn maximum near 35. Waves run 1.3 to 1.7 metres, built from a 1.02-metre southwest swell at nearly 11 seconds plus shorter wind waves. That is enough motion to keep the day honest even under mostly clear skies. The early window is the relative breather. Seas are forecast calmest near 6 AM at 1.3 metres, though it is dark until dawn begins around 8:25 AM and the air is cold: roughly 6 C early, with water near 8 C. By daylight, the falling tide heads toward its 9:33 AM low of 0.26 m. That can be useful timing for shoreline explorers, but exposed footing, cold water and wind-driven chop deserve more respect than optimism. Fishing rates 6.9/10, helped by rising pressure near 1005 hPa and the stronger solunar period from 12:14 to 2:14 PM. The afternoon high tide at 4:26 PM may also be worth watching, but rain is forecast from 5 PM onward and wind remains the limiting factor. Diving scores 6.8/10, improved from yesterday’s 5.1, but 1.3–1.7-metre seas and 8.1 C water make this a conditions-dependent day rather than an automatic green light. Atmospheric visibility is excellent near 38 km; it does not describe underwater visibility. Sailing leads at 8/10, with enough breeze for purpose and a rising barometer, but the gust spread and short wind waves call for disciplined sail choices. Boating improves to 6/10 from yesterday’s 4.2, while kayaking rises to 5.1 but remains a cautious call in cold, gusty water. Tomorrow looks wetter and windier, with waves building to 2.0 m. Conditions ease most on Sunday, when waves are forecast at 0.8–1.3 m, before a rougher turn Tuesday. Best bet: sail early with a conservative plan, or fish the midday solunar window before the evening rain arrives.
