Elfin Cove, AK Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026

Elfin Cove gets a qualified green light today: kayaking and boating are the strongest fits, with fishing, diving, and shoreline wildlife viewing all workable if you respect the cool water, gray sky, and lingering swell. The main advantage is light wind. A representative southeast breeze near 1 knot, with most of the day in the 0.5–7.5-knot range, is a major improvement over the breezier recent stretch and helps explain the 8.4/10 kayaking and 7.9/10 boating outlooks. The catch is that the sea is not flat: waves run about 1.0–1.5 m, with a representative 1.1 m swell at 8.9 seconds from the southwest. That is manageable for appropriately equipped small craft, but it is still enough motion to make exposed-water plans less casual than the wind reading suggests. The calmest wave height is forecast near 11 PM, around 1.02 m, well after daylight has gone. For daylight outings, the late-morning high tide at 11:33 AM lines up closely with the 9:41–11:41 AM solunar major period, making that the day’s cleanest fishing window. Pressure is steady near 1018 hPa, and fishing rates a respectable 6.5/10. A second, darker option develops around the 11:36 PM high tide and 9:41–11:41 PM major period, though it is strictly a night operation. Wildlife scores 7.4/10, with the 5:09 AM low and 5:37 PM low offering tide-focused timing; dawn arrives at 6:42 AM and dusk lingers until 7:06 PM. Diving earns 6.9/10, helped by light wind but tempered by 1.1 m seas and 11.4 C marine water. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 8.8 km, but that says nothing about underwater visibility. Sailing is only middling at 5.2/10: pleasant seas are not guaranteed, and there is simply not much wind to work with. Compared with the last few days, today is notably calmer in wind than October 3–6, and kayaking rebounds sharply from yesterday’s 5.6/10. The next three days look even smoother on the water, with waves easing to 0.6–1.0 m through Saturday before wetter, windier weather builds Sunday onward. Best bet: launch after first light and work the late-morning high-tide window—quiet wind, steady pressure, and enough daylight to enjoy the water without racing the dark.
