Kagalaska Strait, off Galas Point (NOAA PCT5646_1) Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026

Kagalaska Strait is workable but demanding today: best suited to capable sailors and prepared divers, while small-boat and paddle plans deserve a conservative read of the wind and short-period chop. The useful daytime window is late morning into early afternoon, roughly 9:48 AM to 11:48 AM, overlapping a solunar major period and the rising tide toward the 3:56 PM high. Fishing rates a respectable 6.3/10 under rising pressure, favorable solunar timing, and a tide that is moving rather than parked. Wildlife’s 6.9/10 likewise gets its best timing around the late-morning major period and the 4:18–5:18 AM minor period, though the latter is well before dawn. The catch is the breeze. NNW winds range from about 6.6 to 16.2 knots, with gusts building as high as 30.1 knots around 2 PM. That is enough to turn an otherwise manageable 1.1–1.8 m sea into a tiring ride, especially with 0.68 m wind waves at a quick 3.45 seconds riding alongside a 0.98 m northwest swell. Sailing scores 8.2/10 because the wind is useful, but the gust spread means this is a day for reducing sail early rather than congratulating yourself later. Boating is 6.3/10 and kayaking 5.3/10: neither score is a safety clearance, and the cold 8.5 C water makes a capsize or mechanical delay a much less funny story. Diving scores 7.1/10, with moderate cloud cover and relatively modest waves by late evening, but surface conditions and cold water remain the tradeoff. The reported 22.62 km atmospheric visibility is encouraging for travel, not a measure of underwater visibility. Marine SST is 8.2 C, and the broader SST reading is 8.5 C, about 0.8 C above average. Conditions ease Tuesday, with 0.9–1.1 m waves and peak winds near 13 knots. Wednesday brings the opposite bargain: rain, winds near 33 knots, and waves potentially reaching 3.3 m; Thursday and Friday remain rough. Best bet: make Tuesday your water day, but if you go today, use the late-morning tide push and be back before the afternoon gusts start throwing their weight around.
