Ketchikan, AK Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026

Ketchikan gets a clear green light for boats and a qualified yes for paddlers today, with small water and light southerlies doing most of the heavy lifting. Boating leads the board at 8.9/10 and kayaking follows at 8.1/10; fishing is a respectable 7/10. This is not a warm-water day, though: marine water temperature is 12 C, air temperatures run roughly 9–13 C, and the early hours carry the day’s sharpest gust risk, with a 27-knot gust forecast around 4 AM. The most useful daylight window begins after sunrise at 6:56 AM and runs through the morning high tide at 9:39 AM. Winds are generally light, waves sit around 0.3 m, and the rising pressure should make for a more settled-feeling day than the overnight setup suggests. The 7:41–9:41 AM solunar major period overlaps that high water nicely, giving anglers the day’s strongest combined timing signal. Fishing’s 7/10 reflects that overlap along with tide, pressure, wind and available clarity inputs—not a promise of action. For paddlers and small-boat crews, the late-day water may be the smoothest practical option: the forecast’s calmest wave height is about 0.28 m near 7 PM, ahead of the 9:29 PM high tide. Keep an eye on the current, forecast near 0.36 m/s toward 16 degrees, and remember that a low wave forecast is not a safety certificate. The 3:23 PM low tide also gives shoreline explorers a useful access window, with a minor solunar period from 2:11–3:11 PM. Diving rates 6.4/10, workable rather than exceptional. Surface conditions are modest, but cold water remains the tax collector. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 26 km; that is not an underwater-visibility forecast. CoastWatch chlorophyll is very high at 22.16 mg/m³, indicating bloom conditions, so do not assume clear subsurface water. Compared with the recent run, boating improves from 7.8 yesterday and kayaking from 7.3, though neither matches the notably quieter conditions earlier last week. Sailing is middling at 5.8/10: enough breeze to move, but gust spread and light average wind make it a fussy rather than forceful day. Rain chances rise to 100% Tuesday, while Wednesday looks lighter-winded and very small-wave; the calmest marine outlook arrives Saturday. Best bet: launch after sunrise, use the morning high-tide/solunar overlap, and be home before the cold starts negotiating on its own terms.
