Today is a perfect day to get out on the water, especially if you want to do so from inside a boat or kayak. The marine conditions are about as cooperative as they get around Kodiak this time of year. That’s flat enough to make even a long paddle feel effortless. Boating and kayaking score exceptionally well here, 8.6 and 8.9 out of 10 respectively, and that makes sense given the near-total absence of wind waves and a negligible ocean current. Divers also get a solid 7.6, buoyed by the light wind and small swell, though keep expectations tempered on underwater visibility—atmospheric clarity is excellent at over 18 kilometers, but that doesn’t translate below the surface. The water temperature is a brisk 12.9°C, so a good wetsuit or drysuit is still the ticket. Fishing comes in at a respectable 6.6, which isn’t a stellar score but isn’t a washout either. The solunar major periods are oddly timed, running from late night into the early morning and again midday, and with a waxing gibbous moon nearly full, the tidal influence is muted. Pressure is falling slowly from 1020 to 1016 hPa, which can sometimes nudge fish into a feeding mood, but without tide data for this location, that’s a soft signal at best. Surfing and sailing are the low scorers today, both below 5.1, because while the waves are small and clean, there simply isn’t enough energy or consistent breeze to make either activity worthwhile. Looking ahead, Thursday brings a sharp uptick in precipitation chance to 82 percent and waves climbing to half a meter, so today’s window is the one to use. Friday looks drier but windier, with gusts near 16 knots, and by Sunday the wind could hit 20 knots, making small-craft operation much less pleasant. For a late August day on the Gulf of Alaska side of the archipelago, you won’t find a more forgiving stretch of weather than the one sitting right in front of you.
