Prudhoe Bay, AK Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026

Prudhoe Bay gets a qualified green light today: the water is flat, but the cold and northeast breeze make this a day for capable, properly equipped crews rather than casual lingering. Sailing leads the activity ratings at 8.2/10, with boating at 7.0, fishing 6.7, diving 6.6 and kayaking 6.5. Those are suitability estimates, not safety clearances—and 0.5 C water is exceptionally unforgiving of mistakes. The marine forecast holds wave height, swell and wind waves at 0 m through the day, a notably placid surface despite a representative northeast wind near 13 knots and gusts reaching about 21 knots late. That combination favors sailing over paddle-powered plans: there is wind to work with, but the gust spread and -2 to -3 C air temperatures will make exposed hands and any wet gear a fast morale test. For boaters, the lack of seas is a major advantage, though the roughly 0.19 m/s westward current and limited atmospheric visibility near 5 km deserve attention. Flat water does not make navigation automatic. The best all-around daylight window is late morning, roughly 8:48 to 10:48 AM, overlapping the 10:37 AM high tide and a solunar major period. Fishing’s 6.7 rating is supported by that timing, a rising barometer now near 1008 hPa, and manageable winds, but there is no clarity reading here to promise underwater conditions. A second solunar major period arrives after dark from 8:48 to 10:48 PM, near the 9:59 PM high tide, but it also coincides with the day’s strongest forecast gusts and is not the easy option. Divers have a flat surface to work with, yet the water temperature remains the dominant tradeoff; the SST is 0.5 C, even though it is 0.6 C above average. Cloud cover is complete, UV is zero, and no precipitation is indicated. Compared with yesterday, winds are slightly stronger and boating, fishing, sailing, kayaking and wildlife scores all ease back a little, while diving holds at 6.6. The next several days stay wave-free in the marine forecast. Wednesday through Friday look lighter-wind but markedly colder, while Tuesday carries the highest precipitation chance at 37%. Best bet: make the late-morning high-tide window your flat-water outing, then let the northeast gusts have the evening to themselves.
