Red Dog Dock, AK Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026

Red Dog Dock gets a qualified green light today: excellent small-water conditions for boating and kayaking, with sailing also workable, but the cold is the boss and it deserves more respect than the wave chart. Boating leads the board at 7.9/10, kayaking 7.5, sailing 7.1, with fishing 6.3 and diving 6.6. Those are suitability estimates, not a substitute for cold-water preparation or judgment. The water is unusually subdued for the date, with representative waves around 0.12 m at 3.5 seconds, only 0.04 m of swell, and light wind waves near 0.1 m. Southeast wind is running about 7 knots, gusting 12, though the broader daily range reaches 11.4 knots and a stronger 19-knot gust is forecast late tonight. The best practical window is from dawn through early afternoon, before any late-day increase and while the sea state remains small. The 11:12 AM high tide is modest at just 0.24 m, following a 0.09 m low at 5:31 AM; this is a very small tidal swing, so do not expect tide alone to transform access or conditions. For anglers, the late-morning solunar major period from 11:31 AM to 1:31 PM is the day’s strongest timing cue, arriving just after high water. The early minor period, 6:01–7:01 AM, falls before sunrise, while the 6:01–7:01 PM minor period lands near the 5:32 PM low. Stable pressure near 1021 hPa supports the middling-to-good fishing outlook, but no catch promise comes with it. Air temperature tops out near 0.2 C and feels closer to -5.1 C in the representative conditions. Marine SST is 4.2 C, about 1 C above average but still thoroughly cold-water territory. Skies are overcast, UV is negligible, and the reported 65 km atmospheric visibility says nothing about underwater visibility. Divers get manageable surface conditions, but cold exposure remains the central tradeoff. Compared with the reconstructed recent scores, today is less favorable for boating and kayaking than the very calm October 6, but still comfortably usable; sailing improves on that day’s lower score as the breeze returns without much sea. Conditions deteriorate sharply Thursday through Saturday, with 18–23 knot peak winds, high precipitation chances, and waves building as high as 1.7 m. Sunday begins the recovery, and Monday looks notably quieter. Best bet: launch early, use the glassy water before the late-day gusts, and dress for the water rather than the calendar.
