Sand Point, AK Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026
Sand Point gets a qualified go today: strong sailing conditions lead the board, while boaters, anglers, paddlers and divers should treat it as a workable-but-not-casual day. The water is cold, the breeze has teeth, and the sea state is more important than the mostly fair-looking sky. A WNW wind around 12 knots, with gusts reaching 25 knots near 4 PM, supports an 8.8/10 sailing outlook but also builds a choppy tradeoff for smaller craft. Waves run roughly 1.3 to 2.6 m through the day, with a representative 1.42 m sea at 7.8 seconds, plus 1.1 m swell from the southwest. Boating rates 6.6/10 and kayaking 5.3/10: reasonable for prepared operators and protected-water plans, less inviting for anyone hoping for an easy paddle. The calmest wave height arrives near 11 PM, around 1.32 m, though darkness and the late high tide at 11 PM make that a poor bargain for most on-water outings. For fishing, the best daylight overlap is the late-morning major solunar period, 9:41 AM to 11:41 AM, running into the 11:58 AM high tide. Fishing scores 5.5/10, held back by the wind and unsettled sea despite rising pressure. A second major period, 9:41 PM to 11:41 PM, coincides with the late high tide but is after sunset. The 5:15 PM low tide offers a useful shoreline-exploration window before dusk at 8:48 PM; wildlife scores 6.3/10, with the lower water and lighter part of the day more appealing than the gustier afternoon. Divers get only a 5.1/10 proposition. Marine SST is 8.2 C, below the seasonal average by 0.8 C, and the wave action is not doing surface entries any favors. Atmospheric visibility near 37.5 km is excellent, but it says nothing about underwater visibility. Chlorophyll is very high, indicating bloom conditions; it should not be read as a promise of fish or wildlife activity. Compared with October 4, pressure is markedly higher and sailing, boating, paddling and diving all improve, though fishing slips slightly. Looking ahead, October 6 eases to 0.9–1.3 m waves, and October 7 looks like the standout calmer-water day at 0.5–0.8 m before wetter, rougher weather returns. Best bet: sail the daylight hours with a reef-ready plan, or fish the late-morning tide turn if your crew is comfortable with a lively WNW sea.
