CatchWindow fishing intelligence

Sitka, AK Daily Water Report — October 6, 2026

Sitka gets a qualified go for fishing, boating and paddling, but it is not a glassy-water day: the light local wind is doing less damage than the persistent 1.6–1.7 m swell. Fishing leads at 7.6/10, with kayaking 6.8 and boating 6.7; those are useful conditions, not a free pass. The most appealing daylight window is the morning build toward the 10:52 AM high tide, overlapping the 8:49–10:49 AM solunar major period. Pressure is rising toward 1018 hPa, and representative SSE wind is only 4 knots, though gusts have been considerably stronger overnight and the day’s wind range reaches 8.7 knots. The evening high tide at 10:35 PM also lines up with the 8:49–10:49 PM major period, but darkness and a damp, low-visibility forecast make that a more deliberate outing rather than an automatic encore. The tradeoff is sea state. A 1.4 m swell from 244° at 8.7 seconds accounts for most of the 1.7 m wave height; wind waves are minimal at 0.12 m, so this is swell rather than local chop calling the shots. The calmest forecast point is only 1.6 m near 1 AM, not a meaningful daytime escape hatch. Rain is possible throughout the day, cloud cover is near total, and atmospheric visibility is forecast around 2.6 km. Air temperatures hover around 9–11 C, while marine SST is 10.9 C: dress for cold, wet exposure, not the modest wind reading. Compared with the reconstructed recent CatchWindow history, fishing improves from 6.6 yesterday and boating and kayaking also tick upward, while sailing slips to 4.6/10. That makes sense as a practical planning contrast: lighter wind helps small craft, but the swell and heavy cloud cover do not offer much reward for sail-focused time. Wednesday remains wet but waves ease to 1.1–1.6 m. Thursday looks still smaller at 0.7–1.1 m, and Friday through Saturday currently offers the quietest marine forecast, around 0.5–0.7 m, with Friday also dry. Best bet: fish the rising morning tide before the 10:52 AM high, then let the swell—not the gentle breeze—make the final call.
