CatchWindow fishing intelligence
Valdez, AK Daily Water Report — October 4, 2026
Valdez gets a qualified green light for small-craft time today: kayaking leads the board at 8.2/10 and boating follows at 7.9/10, with a flat marine forecast and very light ENE wind doing most of the heavy lifting. The catch is that the weather has no intention of making this feel like a postcard. Expect rain through the day, solid cloud cover, air around 4–7°C, and atmospheric visibility near 4.6 km. That is travel visibility, not a read on underwater conditions. The water forecast is remarkably quiet: waves, swell, and wind waves are all forecast at 0 m, while sustained wind stays roughly 0.8–3.5 knots. Gusts are the detail worth respecting, particularly the stronger early-hours gust potential, with the day’s maximum listed at 15.6 knots around midnight. For paddlers and boaters, the useful daylight window begins after dawn at 7:15 AM and runs through the morning high tide at 9:26 AM, when the 2.79 m high coincides closely with the 7:46–9:46 AM solunar major period. Flat water is helpful; wet, cold exposure is still real, so keep the margin generous. Fishing rates a respectable 6.4/10, helped by the morning major period and another from 7:46–9:46 PM, shortly after the 8:39 PM high tide of 3.31 m. The falling barometer, near 990 hPa, is a tradeoff rather than a promise. A smaller low arrives at 2:09 PM, 1.77 m, alongside the 2:16–3:16 PM minor period. Wildlife is scored 7.4/10, with low-tide proximity and light wind contributing to that estimate. Diving is 6.9/10: surface conditions are unusually cooperative, but cold air, rain, and unavailable marine temperature data argue for conservative planning. Sailing, at 3.9/10, is the day’s obvious mismatch; there simply is not much wind to work with. Compared with the recent CatchWindow record, boating and kayaking improve from yesterday’s 7.1 and 7.0, while fishing also rises from 5.2. Pressure, however, has dropped sharply from 999.9 hPa yesterday. The next several days retain the flat-water pattern and light winds, but rain chances stay high through October 7 before easing later in the week. Best bet: launch after dawn, work the morning high-tide/solunar overlap, and be back warm before the rain turns the easy water into a long cold day.
