Yakutat, Yakutat Bay, AK Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026

Yakutat Bay gets a qualified green light today: boating and sailing have the best overall setup, while paddlers and divers should treat the lingering swell with proper respect rather than mistaking light wind for flat water. An east-southeast breeze around 5 knots, with a daytime range near 4 to 9 knots, keeps the local wind contribution minimal. The catch is the ocean: waves run roughly 1.4 to 2.1 metres, driven chiefly by a 1.44-metre southwest swell at a fairly short 7.1 seconds. That is enough motion to make exposed-water travel and water entry less casual than the wind forecast suggests. The calmest wave height arrives late, near 11 PM, but darkness removes most of the practical advantage. A 0.33 m/s current toward the northwest is another small but real planning item for paddlers and small craft. Boating rates 7.3/10 and sailing 7/10, both improved from the rougher, windier stretch earlier this week. Kayaking rises to 6.2/10 after several low-scoring days, but remains a selective proposition: protected water and conservative route choices make more sense than chasing open-bay mileage. Diving earns 6.6/10, with 10.9 C marine water and moderate swell setting the tradeoff; atmospheric visibility near 29 km is encouraging for travel but says nothing about underwater visibility. For anglers, the 6.5/10 fishing outlook is most interesting around the late-morning solunar major period, 9:54 AM to 11:54 AM, which overlaps the 11:48 AM high tide. Pressure is rising near 1018 hPa, and the light wind supports a manageable working day. Shoreline explorers and wildlife watchers have an 8/10 outlook, with the 5:48 PM low tide and the 4:24–5:24 PM solunar minor period offering a useful late-day overlap before dusk at 7:20 PM. Compared with October 3–6, winds have eased substantially and pressure has recovered, lifting boating and paddling prospects, though the swell keeps conditions from matching the notably calmer October 2. Thursday through Saturday look progressively smoother, with waves near or below a metre by Friday and Saturday; Sunday is the obvious deterioration risk, with winds forecast to peak near 18 knots and waves potentially reaching 2.7 metres. Best bet: launch the day around the late-morning high tide, enjoy the light breeze, and let the southwest swell—not the pleasant forecast—set your limits.
