Hilo, Hilo Bay, Kuhio Bay, HI Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026
Hilo Bay gets a qualified green light today: boating is the standout at 8.1/10, with kayaking also favorable at 7.6/10, but the water is not flat and the afternoon deserves more respect than the gentle representative wind suggests. The best all-around window is early morning through late morning, especially around the 6:42 AM low and the 9:03–11:03 AM solunar major period. Winds range from nearly calm to light for much of the day, while the forecast calls for 1.3–1.4 m seas, with the day’s calmest wave height—still 1.28 m—near 1 AM. That is manageable rather than glassy. A 0.58 m swell from the east at nearly 10 seconds supplies the organized motion beneath the surface; paddlers, small-boat crews, and divers should plan for it rather than be fooled by the lack of wind waves. The early-afternoon high tide at 1:12 PM coincides with the day’s strongest gust forecast, 13.8 knots around 1 PM. That is the tradeoff: a useful tide stage, but a less tidy surface and more variable handling. Pressure is falling from around 1011 hPa, and rain is possible through 4 PM despite zero representative precipitation, so keep the weather margin wide. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 25 km, excellent for seeing weather and shore features, but it says nothing about underwater visibility. Diving rates 6.9/10, down notably from yesterday’s 8.7, while fishing is middling at 5.8/10. The late-morning solunar major is the better fishing timing cue, with another major period from 9:03–11:03 PM; neither score is a safety guarantee. Wildlife scores 7.4/10, helped by light winds and low-tide proximity, with the evening low at 7:37 PM. Compared with the recent run, boating remains strong, but diving and fishing have softened. Thursday brings a wetter, breezier outlook and waves up to 1.6 m; Friday looks comparatively lighter, before seas build again Saturday. Best bet: launch early, use the late-morning solunar window, and be back in before the 1 PM gusts turn a good bay day into extra work.
