Chatham, MA Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026

Chatham gets a qualified green light today: excellent conditions for diving, kayaking and boating on the supplied scores, but with a late-day wind sting that makes an early finish the smart play. The water is relatively orderly through much of the day, with waves running 0.6–0.8 m and a representative 0.66 m at 6.4 seconds. Light north wind is the broad setup, around 4 knots representative, and that supports the 8.2/10 kayaking, 8.1/10 boating and 8.3/10 diving outlooks. Sea-surface temperature is 16.1 C, a touch below average, so comfort and exposure protection still deserve more attention than the calm surface might suggest. The ocean current is forecast near 0.22 m/s toward 153 degrees; it is not dramatic on paper, but it remains part of the plan for paddlers, divers and anyone timing a return. The best all-around window is dawn through late morning. First light arrives around 6:13 AM, sunrise is 6:40 AM, and the morning high tide peaks at 7:57 AM. That overlaps the 7:28–9:28 AM solunar major period, the strongest timing block for the 6.9/10 fishing outlook and the 7/10 wildlife outlook. Fishing has improved from the 6.3 score on October 3, though it remains below yesterday’s 7.7; falling pressure, now 1014 hPa, is one tradeoff. Cloud cover is complete, and the reported 12.2 km atmospheric visibility should not be mistaken for underwater visibility. A second useful window is around the afternoon low at 2:19 PM, with a solunar minor period from 1:58–2:58 PM. It may suit shoreline exploration and wildlife timing, but the day’s biggest caution arrives toward evening: gusts are forecast to reach 29.7 knots at 6 PM. That is a sharp change from the otherwise light-wind picture and a poor reason to linger offshore or paddle home late. Compared with recent CatchWindow reports, diving remains consistently strong, while kayaking rebounds substantially from yesterday’s 6.5. Sailing is only middling at 5.6/10: too little steady breeze early, then too much gust spread later. The next two days look quieter on the water, with waves easing to 0.4–0.7 m Tuesday and 0.2–0.4 m Wednesday; Thursday turns warmer but breezier. Best bet: launch early, use the morning high-tide/solunar overlap, and be off the water well before the evening gusts start acting like they own the place.
