CatchWindow fishing intelligence
Cape May, NJ Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026
Cape May gets an emphatic go for small-boat and paddle plans today: boating rates 9.1/10 and kayaking 8.4/10, backed by very light early wind and a notably tame sea. Waves are running about 0.2 m on a 7.55-second period, with the day’s minimum near 0.18 m around 10 AM. That is the sort of water that makes route choice and timing matter more than wave management—though it is still October, and the 19.1 C marine temperature deserves proper clothing and a conservative margin. The best broad window is from after sunrise through late morning, especially around the 6:36 AM high tide and into the 9:31–11:31 AM solunar major period. Winds are generally light early, skies are forecast clear, and no rain is indicated. Anglers have a respectable 6.9/10 setup, helped by the tide, light wind, falling 1019 hPa pressure, and that late-morning solunar window. A second fishing option arrives around the 6:58 PM high tide, with the evening major period following from 9:31–11:31 PM, but conditions become less inviting as winds build; the strongest gusts are forecast near 19.6 knots at 11 PM. Sailors get a workable but modest 6.2/10. The sea state is friendly, but the breeze is not likely to provide much dependable drive for much of the day. Think pleasant drift-and-trim conditions rather than a day to count on steady power. Wildlife scores 6.1/10, with the 12:33 PM low tide and the 4:01–5:01 PM minor solunar period offering reasonable shoreline-exploring timing. Atmospheric visibility is excellent near 29 km, but that says nothing about underwater visibility; no diving recommendation is available today. Compared with the recent CatchWindow record, today is calmer for paddlers and boaters than yesterday’s 9.2-knot representative wind, while boating improves from 8.2 to 9.1 and kayaking from 6.7 to 8.4. Fishing is only slightly better than yesterday. Thursday through Saturday remain relatively gentle, with waves mostly 0.2–0.4 m and peak winds 7.5–13.3 knots. Conditions turn less settled Sunday and Monday, when rain chances rise and waves may reach 1.4 m. Best bet: launch after sunrise, enjoy the glassier morning through late morning, and be back with the boat secured before the late-night gusts decide to join the conversation.
