The Battery, NY Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026

The Battery gets a strong green light for small-craft time today: boating rates 9.5/10 and kayaking 9.3/10, backed by exceptionally slight seas and very light daytime wind. This is not a warm day, though, so the water may be quiet while the cockpit feels brisk. The cleanest all-around window is from first light through the late morning. Dawn begins at 6:31 AM, sunrise is 6:58 AM, and the morning high tide arrives at 6:18 AM before water falls toward the 12:29 PM low. Winds are generally light, with a representative NNW breeze of 2 knots and a forecast range of just 0.6 to 8.4 knots. Waves are only around 0.08 m at the calmest point and remain in a modest 0.1 to 0.3 m range. That is excellent water texture for a careful paddle or a relaxed boat run, but it also leaves sailors with limited working breeze: sailing is a middling 6.2/10 despite the smooth surface. Fishing earns 7/10, with the most useful timing around the 9:26-11:26 AM solunar major period, overlapping the falling tide. A second major period runs 9:26-11:26 PM, after the evening 6:36 PM high. Pressure is falling from around 1019 hPa, so conditions are not static even if the surface looks almost polished. The tradeoff is temperature and the evening gust increase. Air temperatures start near 7 C, with a representative feels-like value near 5 C, before reaching about 18 C. Gusts are forecast to top out at 16.5 knots around 7 PM, so late-day paddlers should not mistake the morning’s glassy look for an all-day guarantee. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 20.5 km under clear skies, but that says nothing about underwater visibility; no diving score is available. Compared with the recent CatchWindow record, today is notably calmer in wind than yesterday’s 9.2-knot representative breeze and improves boating and kayaking scores, while sailing drops as the breeze fades. Thursday through Saturday stay mostly dry with low waves, though winds strengthen somewhat Thursday and Friday. Sunday and Monday bring higher rain chances and building seas, especially Monday at 0.3 to 0.6 m. Best bet: launch after dawn, enjoy the nearly wrinkle-free water before noon, and pack the extra layer you will be glad you brought.
