Beaufort, Duke Marine Lab, NC Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026
Go early and go light: this is an excellent low-wind water day for boating, kayaking and diving, with the main compromise being that sailors may find more drifting than driving. Boating rates 8.6/10, kayaking 9/10 and diving 9.6/10 under a near-flat 0.5 m sea, a representative north wind of just 2 knots, and no rain indicated. The calmest wave reading is near 10 AM at 0.48 m, so late morning is the cleanest all-purpose window for small craft and underwater plans. The water is doing its quiet thing rather than its dramatic thing. A 0.52 m, short-period swell from 134 degrees remains in the mix, while wind waves are negligible. That is friendly on paper, but it is not a safety pass: keep an eye on tide stage, your route, and the modest ocean current measured at about 0.17 m/s toward 72 degrees. Marine SST is 24.4 C, with the NOAA CoastWatch anomaly running 0.7 C above average. Chlorophyll is moderate at 0.63 mg/m³; that describes coastal productivity, not what may be visible underwater or what may be feeding. For anglers, the 6.8/10 score is respectable rather than red-hot. The useful timing is the 10:24 AM–12:24 PM solunar major period, which overlaps the approach to the 12:45 PM low tide. A second major period arrives late, from 10:24 PM to midnight, after the 6:58 PM high. Pressure is rising from around 1015 hPa, and winds stay generally manageable, though gusts are forecast to top out near 10.7 knots around 3 PM. Compared with the reconstructed CatchWindow history, today is notably calmer in wind than the roughly 6–9 knot days earlier this week. That helps paddlers and boaters, while sailing slips to 5.2/10 because the breeze may simply be too scarce to be useful. Wildlife remains a middling 6.1/10; low tide near 12:45 PM and the late-afternoon minor solunar period are the better timing cues. Friday stays relatively gentle, but the weekend turns less cooperative: waves build to 0.6–1.3 m Saturday and 1.3–2.0 m Sunday alongside increasing rain chances. Best bet: launch after sunrise, use the glassy late-morning water, and be off the exposed water before the afternoon gusts remember they have a job.
