USCG Station Hatteras, NC Daily Water Report — October 6, 2026

Today is a qualified yes for sailing and a selective yes for fishing and diving; small-craft plans deserve more caution than the scorecard’s sunnier side. A steady northeast wind around 14 knots, topping out near 16.5 knots this morning, is building mostly short-period wind waves: about 1.1 metres at 3.7 seconds, with total seas running 0.8–1.1 metres. That is workable water, not lazy water. Sailing gets the day’s strongest rating at 8.8/10, matching yesterday’s mark. The breeze is consistent rather than wildly gusty, pressure is stable near 1020 hPa, and no rain is indicated. Cloud cover is complete, though, so expect a grey deck rather than a postcard sky; atmospheric visibility near 29 km does not say anything about what you can see below the surface. For anglers, the 6.7/10 fishing outlook improves on yesterday’s 6.1, helped by stable pressure and useful timing. The first major solunar period runs 8:45–10:45 AM, then a second arrives 8:45–10:45 PM. The afternoon low tide at 12:36 PM and high at 6:13 PM provide the day’s more distinct tide transition, although the tidal range is modest. Water is warm at 23.9 C, about 0.8 C above average. CoastWatch chlorophyll is very high at 5.59 mg/m³, a bloom-condition signal, but it is not a fishing report and should not be read as proof of fish activity or water clarity. Diving rates 7/10, down from 7.5 yesterday. The water temperature is inviting, but the short, wind-driven chop is the tradeoff; divers should treat the score as a planning guide, not a safety clearance. Boating (5.9) and kayaking (5.4) have slipped more noticeably from recent lighter-wind days, with the northeast breeze, chop, and a 0.25 m/s current toward 233 degrees all adding workload. The calmer sea state was near midnight, at 0.84 m, but daylight users will find the best practical window around early morning before the day’s wind peak, or later as the breeze eases. Tomorrow trends gentler, and Thursday looks especially favorable with 0.5–0.6 m waves and peak wind near 5.9 knots; conditions turn rougher again Friday into the weekend. Best bet: rig the sailboat early, enjoy the dependable northeast push, and leave the heroics for a flatter Thursday.
