CatchWindow fishing intelligence
Wilmington, NC Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026
Wilmington gets a solid go for boats and paddles today, with a caveat: it is a cool, gray start and the ocean has enough short-period motion to keep the ride from feeling glassy. Boating and kayaking lead the board at 7.9/10, helped by light NNE winds around 5 knots, no rain indicated, and a modest current near 0.08 m/s toward the southwest. That is favorable working weather, not a safety guarantee—especially around the two low tides, 1:43 AM and 1:58 PM, when shallow-water margins deserve their usual respect. The best all-around daylight window looks like late morning into early afternoon. High tide arrives at 7:27 AM, then the water falls through the morning; fishing’s 6.9/10 rating gets its strongest timing support from the 9:44–11:44 AM solunar major period. The afternoon low at 1:58 PM is followed by a useful minor period from 4:14–5:14 PM, with the evening flood building toward the 7:59 PM high. A second major period runs 9:44–11:44 PM, though darkness and the waning 14% moon make that a different proposition than a casual sunset outing. Offshore, forecast waves run 0.6–0.9 m, with a representative 0.86 m at a quick 5.05 seconds. The 0.64 m easterly swell is also short at 4.2 seconds, so expect small but fairly busy texture rather than long, orderly lines. Conditions ease toward their calmest wave height near 10 PM, around 0.64 m. Sailing is only middling at 5.4/10: the breeze is light enough that getting moving may be the challenge, while full cloud cover removes any illusion that this is a postcard day. Air temperatures climb from the low teens Celsius into about 24 C, but the morning’s 90% humidity and 14 km atmospheric visibility argue for layers and patience. Compared with recent CatchWindow estimates, boating is a step down from yesterday’s 8.6/10 and the stronger 9-plus days earlier in the week, while kayaking holds close to yesterday’s 7.8. Fishing is slightly softer than yesterday’s 7.2, with falling pressure adding a little uncertainty. Thursday and Friday look notably quieter offshore, with 0.4–0.7 m waves and light winds. Conditions turn rougher and wetter Saturday into Sunday as waves build to 1.1–1.5 m and rain chances rise. Best bet: launch after the morning high, fish the late-morning solunar window, and be back with the tide still doing the work for you.
