CatchWindow fishing intelligence

San Juan, La Puntilla, San Juan Bay, PR Daily Water Report — October 7, 2026

San Juan Bay gets a clear green light for boats, paddles and diving today, with the caveat that the afternoon is the least tidy part of an otherwise manageable water day. Boating leads the board at 8.1/10, kayaking follows at 8.0, and diving is the standout at 8.8. Those are opportunity scores, not safety guarantees, but the ingredients are favorable: southeast wind is a modest 4–10 knots, waves run about 0.6–0.8 m, and the reported ocean current is light at roughly 0.06 m/s toward the south. The best all-around window is early, from dawn through late morning. Sunrise is 6:17 AM, and the 5:50 AM high tide gives way to a midday low of just 0.09 m at 12:01 PM. Wind and wave conditions are relatively restrained before the afternoon gustier stretch, when gusts are forecast to top out near 14.8 knots around 3 PM. That is not a dramatic blow, but it is enough to make exposed paddling and small-boat handling less relaxed than the morning version. Divers have warm water on their side: marine SST is 29.9 C, about 0.8 C above average, with low wind-wave chop around 0.12 m. The 0.42 m, short-period swell from the northeast remains the main surface-motion tradeoff. Atmospheric visibility is forecast near 22 km, though that says nothing about underwater visibility. Chlorophyll is low at 0.06 mg/m³; it describes low surface-water productivity, not what may be swimming below. Fishing rates a solid 7.7/10, with the 8:56–10:56 AM solunar major period lining up nicely with the morning outing. A second major period arrives 8:56–10:56 PM, after sunset at 6:10 PM; the evening high tide peaks at 6:41 PM. Wildlife scores 7.6, with low-tide proximity around noon and the afternoon minor period from 3:26–4:26 PM offering the model’s better timing. Compared with recent CatchWindow reports, today’s boating and kayaking outlook is a touch below the notably calm October 1 setup, but it remains stronger than several windier late-September days. The next several days keep rain chances elevated, while waves gradually build from 0.6–0.7 m Thursday toward 0.7–1.0 m by Monday. Best bet: launch near dawn, use the morning’s lighter breeze, and be back in before the 3 PM gusts start putting wrinkles in the plan.
