CatchWindow fishing intelligence
Yorktown USCG Training Center, VA Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026
A strong go for boating, sailing and diving, with kayaking good rather than automatic thanks to a gusty early stretch. The water is small and orderly: representative waves are 0.22 m at 2.3 seconds, with only 0.12 m of swell, while the day’s wave range stays around 0.1–0.3 m. The calmest water is forecast near 5 PM, when wave height falls to about 0.08 m. That is the cleanest all-purpose window for a paddle, a relaxed run by boat, or getting in the water. The morning has the main tradeoff. Winds are generally light through the day, but gusts are forecast to top out near 19.4 knots around 8 AM, close to the 8:09 AM high tide. That is enough to make exposed water feel less casual than the wave height suggests, especially for smaller craft. By afternoon, the 2:29 PM low tide arrives with a much quieter water forecast, followed by the 8:27 PM high. No rain is indicated, skies are forecast clear, and atmospheric visibility is near 19.8 km, though that should not be mistaken for underwater visibility. Sailing earns an 8.2/10, boating 8.6, and diving 8.4, all supported by low waves, dry weather and a marine temperature of 22.4 C. Kayaking rates 7.3/10: still worthwhile, but better timed around the later-day lull than the gustier morning. Fishing is a middling 6.5/10, with the late-morning solunar major period from 10:23 AM to 12:23 PM the most useful timing cue; the late-evening major period runs 10:23 PM to midnight. Wildlife is 6.1/10, with the 2:29 PM low tide and the 4:53–5:53 PM minor period offering the better overlap. Compared with the recent CatchWindow run, boating remains excellent but is below yesterday’s 9.3, while sailing improves sharply from yesterday’s 6.7. Pressure is rising from 1014 hPa, but remains below the higher values recorded earlier this week. Friday looks similarly gentle, with 0.1–0.2 m waves and light wind. Conditions turn more unsettled Sunday, when winds may reach 17 knots, rain chances rise to 83%, and waves build to 0.5–0.8 m. Best bet: launch or slip in during the late-afternoon lull, when the water is forecast to be at its flattest and the morning’s gustiness is behind you.
