Tofino Harbour, BC Daily Water Report — October 5, 2026

Tofino Harbour gets a qualified green light today: boating and kayaking have the strongest setup, while the grey, wet atmosphere and persistent swell keep this from being a carefree all-activities day. The water-side advantage is light wind. Representative northerlies are just 2 knots, with a day range under 6 knots, so paddlers and boaters should find the most manageable conditions from dawn through the afternoon. Kayaking rates 8.1/10 and boating 7.7/10, with only a brief rain window around 8–9 AM. The catch is the sea state: waves hold around 1.2–1.4 m, largely driven by a 1.16 m west swell at 9.3 seconds. That is not much wind chop—wind waves are negligible—but it is still moving water, especially where harbour protection fades. The strongest gusts arrive near 8 PM, reaching 14.2 knots. Fishing is a middling 5.8/10, unchanged from yesterday and below the stronger 6.6 readings earlier in the week. The best timing overlaps the morning solunar major period, 8:19–10:19 AM, shortly after the 9:35 AM high tide. A second useful window runs 8:19–10:19 PM, spanning the 9:10 PM high. Rising pressure, from roughly 1019 toward 1022 hPa, is a modest plus, but the forecast’s 0.1 km atmospheric visibility and full cloud cover make navigation and shoreline awareness more demanding. That visibility figure is for the air, not underwater clarity. Diving earns 6.1/10, a touch below yesterday’s reconstructed 6.3. Water is cool at 13.6 C, despite running 1.5 C above average, and the swell remains the main tradeoff. Chlorophyll is very high at 5.95 mg/m³, indicating bloom conditions; it should not be treated as a read on fish, wildlife, or underwater visibility. Sailing is only a 5.2/10: there is simply not much breeze to work with, despite manageable gusts for most of the day. Wildlife scores 7.8/10, with the low-tide period around 3:19 PM and light winds offering the best general viewing conditions. Wednesday and Thursday look notably light-wind, though waves build to 1.5–1.8 m Wednesday; Friday remains relatively calm in wind but retains 1.3–1.8 m seas. Best bet: launch a kayak after the morning rain window, keep the swell in your decision-making, and be off the water well before the evening gusts.
