Cape Town, South Africa Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026

Cape Town harbour gets a qualified go today: boating and kayaking lead the board at 7.5/10, but the big southwest swell makes this a choose-your-water-carefully kind of day, not a blanket invitation. The atmosphere is unusually cooperative for early October—dry, mostly clear, with light representative SSW wind around 1 knot and no rain indicated. That calm surface wind is the good news. The catch is underneath it: 3.6 m of swell at a 10.65-second period from 231°, with total wave heights ranging from 2.8 to 3.7 m. Wind chop is almost absent at 0.04 m, so the sea may look tidier than its energy deserves. Harbour users should treat exposed entrances, walls and outer-water transitions with proper respect. The day’s lowest forecast wave height is still 2.84 m near 17:00. For anglers, the 6.7/10 score is a modest improvement on yesterday’s 6.4, helped by light winds and rising pressure near 1018 hPa. The strongest solunar window runs 09:57–11:57, with a smaller late-afternoon period from 16:27–17:27. The latter coincides with the easing wave forecast, though gusts are expected to peak at 23.3 knots around 16:00—an excellent reason to keep plans flexible rather than heroic. Diving rates 7/10, better than the past two days but below the 7.9 logged on October 5. Water is cold at 13.8°C, about 1.4°C below average, and the large swell remains the limiting factor. Atmospheric visibility of 30.16 km is encouraging for the day above water, but it says nothing about underwater visibility. Sailing is the weak fit at 3.9/10: too little steady breeze for satisfying drive, with a potentially sharp gust spread later on. The next few days look progressively friendlier in wave terms: 2.5–2.7 m Saturday, 1.8–2.5 m Sunday, then 1.4–1.8 m Monday, while winds remain generally light. Best bet: use the calm morning for sheltered harbour boating or paddling, and let the swell have the last word outside.
