Yakutat, Yakutat Bay, AK Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026

Yakutat Bay gets a qualified green light today: boating is the standout at 8/10, with sailing and diving both at 7/10, but the bay is not flat and the cold water still demands grown-up decisions. The useful part of the day is the light wind. Northwest flow stays near calm to 6 knots, though gusts may reach about 14 knots around mid-afternoon. That is a major improvement over the stronger-wind stretch earlier this week, reflected in boating scores that climbed from 3.6–4.6 on October 3–5 to 8/10 now. The catch is the underlying sea: waves run roughly 0.9 to 1.3 metres, driven mostly by a 0.94-metre southwest swell at nearly seven seconds rather than local wind chop. Wind waves are minimal, but a long-ish, persistent swell can still make launches, landings, and exposed water feel busier than the breeze suggests. For anglers, the 5.9/10 fishing score points to a decent but not exceptional day. The strongest timing overlap is late morning through early afternoon, with the solunar major period from 10:40 AM to 12:40 PM arriving around the 12:23 PM high tide. Pressure is steady near 1015 hPa, and dry, mostly clear weather removes one common annoyance. A second, shorter solunar minor period runs 5:10–6:10 AM near the 6:03 AM low; the evening low is at 6:33 PM. Those tide changes can sharpen the day’s timing, but they are not a promise of action. Paddlers have a workable 6.9/10 forecast if they choose their water carefully: light winds help, while the swell and a reported ocean current of about 0.22 m/s toward the southwest remain the tradeoff. Divers rate 7/10, with light wind and modest surface conditions helping, but the 10.8 C marine sea-surface temperature is chilly. The reported 6.42 km atmospheric visibility is not an underwater-visibility reading. Friday looks similarly quiet, with around 1 metre of waves and light winds. Saturday remains relatively low-wave but introduces a 62% precipitation chance; Sunday is the obvious downgrade, with winds up to 18.6 knots and waves potentially reaching 2.7 metres. Best bet: launch for the late-morning high-tide window, enjoy the light wind, and treat the southwest swell with more respect than its one-metre number may seem to deserve.
