Aransas Wildlife Refuge, TX Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026

A very good water day overall, with boating the clear winner and paddling, diving, and sailing all comfortably in the useful range. The catch is simple: conditions are gentler than dramatic, and the morning gusts deserve more respect than the representative 6-knot north wind suggests. The best all-around window is from shortly after dawn through the late morning, before the day’s strongest gust potential around 9:00 AM, when gusts could reach 18.9 knots. Waves are modest, running about 0.5 to 0.7 metres, with the calmest forecast near 4:00 AM at 0.48 metres. The swell is small but fairly short-period—0.46 metres at 4.15 seconds from the east-southeast—so it may still put a little texture on exposed water rather than delivering glass. Wind waves are only 0.12 metres, and no rain is indicated. Boating rates 8.9/10, an improvement over the already solid 8.6 recorded yesterday. Kayaking is 7.8/10, also stronger than yesterday’s 7.3, though paddlers should plan around the gustier morning rather than treating the low average wind as a blanket guarantee. Sailing comes in at 7.1/10: enough breeze to work with, but less score-friendly than the past several days, when sailing ranged from 7.5 to 8.5. Diving is rated 7.8/10, supported by warm 28.6 C marine water and manageable seas; the reported 12.8 km visibility is atmospheric visibility, not an underwater-clarity reading. Fishing holds at 5.9/10, unchanged from the previous three reports. The more promising timing is the 10:48 AM–12:48 PM solunar major period, with another major period from 10:48 PM to 12:48 AM. The evening minor period, 5:18–6:18 PM, overlaps the very small high tide at 6:42 PM. Tidal range is minimal, from 0.18 metres low at 2:54 AM to 0.22 metres high, so don’t expect the tide itself to do much heavy lifting. Pressure is rising from a 1012 hPa representative reading, skies are forecast nearly clear, and the air warms from about 23 C into the low 31s C. Recent history shows this is a notably calmer setup than October 5, when 12.7-knot wind coincided with lower boating and paddling scores. Friday stays manageable but slightly choppier at 0.6–0.7 metres; the quieter marine stretch arrives Sunday and Monday, with 0.3–0.5 metre waves. Best bet: launch after first light, keep an eye on the morning gusts, and let the late-morning solunar window do the scheduling.
