Tofino Harbour, BC Daily Water Report — October 8, 2026

Good harbour day overall: kayaking and boating have the clearest green light, while sailing and diving are more conditional. Light northwest wind is doing most of the good work early, with a representative 3 knots and a daytime range that stays modest until the evening. The catch is the underlying sea state: waves run 1.4–1.7 m, driven mainly by a 1.26 m west swell at nearly 10 seconds. That is not a flat-water setup, even if the harbour feels civilized. The most workable stretch is from dawn through the late-afternoon lull. The sea is forecast calmest near 4 PM, around 1.38 m, and winds should remain comparatively manageable before rain arrives between 7 and 11 PM. For paddlers, that makes an earlier launch and a return well before dark the sensible play; kayaking rates 7.5/10, down from 8.3 yesterday and 8.4 two days ago as the swell adds consequence. Boating still scores a useful 7.1/10, but the evening gust forecast—up to 20.4 knots around 9 PM—makes the rain window a poor time to be stretching plans. Fishing is middling at 5.9/10, lower than the last two days’ 6.9s. The best timing overlap is around the late-morning high tide at 11:51 AM, inside the 10:45 AM–12:45 PM solunar major period. Pressure is falling from a high near 1020 hPa, so treat that window as the day’s best available opportunity rather than a guarantee. The 6:08 PM low tide coincides closely with the 5:15–6:15 PM solunar minor period, but it also leads toward worsening weather. Divers get a 6/10: water is relatively warm at 14.3 C, but the swell and very high chlorophyll reading are not a promise of underwater visibility. Atmospheric visibility is forecast at 12.6 km, which is useful above water only. Wildlife scores 7.9/10, with low-tide timing and light wind supporting shoreline exploration; keep the evening weather turn in mind. Compared with the recent run, air temperatures are milder, but water activities are generally a notch less favourable than the very calm October 6–7 stretch. Friday looks wetter and rougher, with waves up to 2.6 m. Saturday improves, and Sunday into Monday currently offers the smallest wave range. Best bet: launch early, use the late-morning high-tide window well, and be back in before the evening rain and gusts start acting like they own the harbour.
